Objective and Significance of the Initiative
The primary objective of this initiative is to equip artisans with essential entrepreneurial skills required to succeed in an increasingly competitive global market. It aligns with the vision of the Government of India to empower artisans through skill development and entrepreneurship, promote self-reliance, and strengthen the presence of traditional handicrafts at both national and international levels.
Additionally, the use of improved tools helps reduce physical strain, contributing to a safer, more sustainable, and dignified working environment. This initiative is in alignment with the broader objectives of the National Handicrafts Development Programme (NHDP), which focuses on skill upgradation, design and product development, technological intervention, and improved market access for artisans across India.
Furthermore, the initiative promotes environmentally responsible and locally rooted practices by supporting Kantha Embroidery & Stitching craft. This not only preserves traditional knowledge but also encourages eco-friendly production practices in the handicrafts sector.
Selection Committee for Distribution of Toolkit:
A selection committee was formed consisting of the Directors of the Producer Comapany and Secretary, Samaj Kalyan Mahila Unnayan Kendra. A total 100 Handicraft Artisans were selected in consultation with the leaders and looking to the poor and interested Artisans.The selection process was carried out in a fair and transparent manner.giving prerence tp genuine artisans possessing valid Pehchan Card and engaged in Kantha Embroidery and Stitching Craft.
Mr. Rajiv Saikia, Senior Asst. Director and Mr.Dhrubajyoti Mondal, HPO from HSC, Burdwan, O/O Development Commissioner (Handicrafts)), Inspector Ranvijay Singh, Pampa Lodh, Bhabita Das,Anti Human Trafficking Unit, Jalangi 246 BN BSFMr. Tanmay Brahma, Former G.M. DIC, Dr, Uttam Ray, Murshidabad KVK were the other dignitaries present on the occasion.
During the inaugural session, delegated offered their insights about the programme. Shri Rajiv Saikia, Sr. Asst Director, from HSC, Burdwan, O/O Development Commissioner (Handicrafts)) emphasized the DC (Handicrafts) Govt. of India vision of uplifting artisans through access to modern tools to enhance the craft and livlihood. Inspector Ranvijay Singh highlighted the importance of women employment and skill development noting that these tools would help artisans and suggested that one skilled artisans should develop the skill of another 10 children of the stitching and craft.
During the event, there was a sense of excitement among the beneficiaries. The local craftsmen received their toolkits with great enthusiasm. These tools are expected to make a substantial difference in their work quality and efficiency. The distribution not only supports their current work but also helps in preserving and growing traditional handicrafts..
Each artisan was provided with a comprehensive Tool Kit, specially curated to meet the practical requirements of their craft. These tool kits included essential instruments and equipment used in the processing, weaving, and finishing of Kantha Embroidery and Stitching Craft as per the list of National Design Centre such as, Stitching Machine, Embroidery rounds frame Small, medium & large, Tracing paper Sheet, Needles, Thread and Scissor etc
Distribution of Toolkit:
The programme was concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks by Ms. Sabita Chakraborty expressing gratitude to all the dignitaries and participants who made the event a success.
Way Forward:
The distribution of toolkits under the Ambedkar Hastshilp Vikas Yojana (AHVY) of the National Handicrafts Development Programme (NHDP), implemented by the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, marks a significant initiative toward empowering local women artisans. This initiative highlights the importance of providing appropriate tools and equipment to enhance artisans’ skills, productivity, and the quality of their handicraft products.
The continued support, guidance, and monitoring by the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) in collaboration with Amaipara Pollishree Handicraft Producer Company Ltd. will play a vital role in the sustainable development of the handicraft sector. These efforts will strengthen the livelihoods of women artisans, promote self-reliance, preserve traditional craftsmanship, and contribute to their socio-economic empowerment.
